CMS: Be wary of Part D scams

LTC Liability Monitor, April 27, 2006

CMS warned seniors and disabled people of a Medicare Part D drug plan scheme, reported Focus, a National Center for Assisted Living newsletter. Called the "$299 Ring," the ploy gets Medicare beneficiaries to withdraw $299 from their checking accounts to pay for a nonexistent prescription drug plan. The scam artists call the unassuming elders and disabled and ask them for their bank account information to help them enroll in the nonexistent plan.

CMS says that legitimate drug plans won't ask for payment over the telephone or Internet. Plans must bill the beneficiary for the monthly premium instead. If consumers receive a phone call they suspect may be apart of the "$299 Ring," they are asked to call 877/772-3379, reported Focus.
