Swiss pharma taking stab at dust-mite vaccine

Respiratory Care Weekly, April 26, 2006

People with dust-mite allergies might get a new allergy vaccine based on DNA from the allergen, reported the BBC News. The vaccine, made by Swiss pharmaceutical Cytos, moved into small human trials earlier this year. Patients experienced fewer allergy symptoms and asthma attacks after taking the vaccine and becoming exposed to the allergen.

"Patients experienced a significant and lasting improvement, suggesting that the treatment effectively modified the underlying cause of the disease," Cytos Chief Executive Wolfgang Renner told the BBC News. The company also is working on grass and tree pollen vaccines that cause hay fever, as well as a pet dander allergy vaccine.
