Injection to treat alcoholism wins federal approval

Infection Control Monitor, April 21, 2006

The Food and Drug Administration approved Vivitrol, said spokewoman Laura Alvey. Alkermes Inc. will make the injection form drug also known as naltrexone. They hope monthly injections, administered at the doctor's office, will be easier for alcoholics than a daily pill regimen.

The drug works by blocking neurotransmitters in the brain believed to be associated with alcohol dependency. It is to be used concurrently with counseling or group therapy after the product launches in June.
