Scientists accuse drug firms of inventing diseases
Infection Control Monitor, April 21, 2006
Scientists have accused major pharmaceutical companies of 'medicalizing' problems from high cholesterol to menopausal symptoms to increase profits, the Daily News reports.
A group of experts from around the worlds met last week in Newcastle, New South Wales to discuss the claims that the industry exaggerates conditions. David Henry and Ray Moynihan, of Newcastle University, say that "disease-mongering poses a global challenge to those interested in public health, demanding in turn a global response."
They accuse drug companies of funding advertising campaigns under the guise of 'disease-awareness' that is more about selling drugs than helping or educating people.
