Man suffers stroke, issued parking ticket at hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, April 24, 2006
A man admitted to St. Joseph's Health Centre in Sudbury, ON, was issued a parking ticket for leaving his vehicle in a handicapped space outside the emergency room, Greater Sudbury News reports. Ron Gavel was told he suffered a stroke, and was immediately admitted.
"I knew there was something wrong...when I got there, there was only one place to park, and it was a disabled spot with a meter," Gavel said. "I told a nurse I had my vehicle parked there, and it needed to be moved. I don't remember what she said because I was so confused at the time."
Gavel has the means to pay the ticket, but thinks hospital security should have realized it belonged to someone who had been admitted through the emergency room.
