Reducing theft from offices

Healthcare Security Weekly, April 17, 2006

The lucrative business of office theft routinely claims countless purses, wallets, office machines, computers, tape recorders, expensive pens, radios, and the like. But break-ins are not the only mode of entry. Thieves often gain access to office areas disguised as repairmen, maintenance workers, or businessmen, preying on unsuspecting employees and stealing their, or your facility's property. And employees themselves steal postage stamps, petty cash, telephone time-and even confidential, proprietary information. While there is no such thing as an infallible office security system, here are a couple tips that you can take to decrease the potential for theft:

  • Control access to keys
  • Keep an eye on office supplies
  • Monitor copiers carefully
  • Lock filing cabinets
  • Secure office safes

You can find this tip and others in the HCPro publication, The Theft Prevention Guide for Hospitals, Nursing Homes, and Assisted Living Facilities. For more information about this book or to order, call our customer service department at 800/650-6787 or click here
