No new CMS position on pain procedures, FASA reports
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, April 19, 2006
The Federated Ambulatory Surgery Association (FASA) has learned from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that the federal agency has not changed its position on ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) performing pain procedures, according to FASA?s Web site.
FASA had learned that some state CMS surveyors were incorrectly telling ASCs they could no longer perform pain procedures, leading to the association contacting the agency for clarification, as reported in last week's Ambulatory Surgery Regulatory Update.
FASA is reminding ASCs that they must meet the conditions of coverage to perform pain procedures, which includes the ASC functioning as a distinct entity from all other facilities.
FASA is asking ASCs that are incorrectly cited during a survey or that are told by a surveyor that an ASC cannot perform pain procedures to send this information to FASA@fasa.org or call 703/836-8808.
