Low gravity chamber may assist in joint surgery healing
Rehab Private Practice Alert, April 12, 2006
Researchers in San Diego say they believe that a lower body positive pressure chamber may aid in the healing of patients who undergo joint surgery, reported CBS News.
The chamber acts as a low gravity source, which takes the weight off a patient's leg when attempting to walk after surgery.
Instead of having to put the body's entire weight on a recently repaired knee or hip, patients can use the chamber to walk on a treadmill with their weight similar to what it would be if they were on the moon.
The study is attempting to show that walking earlier, even without the body's full weight, would speed up the recovery time and allow for more therapy earlier on in the process, according to CBS News.
