RHIO to solve physician-access problem for medically underserved patients

E-Health Trend Watch, April 7, 2006

A regional health information organization in the Denver area has formed the Integrated Physician Network Avista (iPN Avista), a patient information network. Physicians in the network have agreed to open their panels to individuals who are uninsured or have Medicare and Medicaid.

All iPN Avista providers are now online using the electronic health record, billing, and patient referral system by NextGen Healthcare Information Systems. The network connects a hospital, three community health center sites, a county health department, and primary care and specialist providers so they can provide care to patients, reduce paperwork, and reduce the risk of errors. iPN Avista allows physicians to access and share patient data through a secure Internet portal. The data helps specialists treat patients who have trouble accessing their services.
