HIV-positive blood stolen from Vancouver hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, April 10, 2006
St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, Canada experienced a break-in sometime between Saturday and Monday morning, CTV News in Toronto reports. The hospital reported 19 vials of HIV-positive blood missing.
"While HIV-infected blood can remain infectious 72 hours after the vials thaw, the virus's strength dissipates as time passes," Dr. Akber Mithani, vice president of medical affairs, told CTV.
Hospital security will review video tapes and stepped up security measures. The virology lab on the sixth floor added 24-hour security.
The perpetrator's interest in the vials is still unknown
