CMS denies request to disclose payment information

Physician Practice Advisor, April 12, 2006

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has denied a request by Business Roundtable, which represents CEOs from 160 of the largest U.S. companies, to disclose information on the cost and quality of care provided to Medicare beneficiaries, The New York Times reports.

Business Roundtable, whose member companies provide health insurance to more than 25 million employees, wants to use the data to help patients compare and rate doctors. The Bush Administration has expressed similar interests in its recent requests for private insurers to disclose such data.

According to the article, administration officials said they shared the Business Roundtable's goals but are constrained by court rulings that limit the disclosure of data showing Medicare payments to individual doctors, identified by name.
