Mississippi becomes 40th state with direct access

Rehab Private Practice Alert, April 5, 2006

Patients in Mississippi needing physical therapy now can go directly to see their PTs, without having to wait to receive a referral from a physician, reported PT Bulletin Online.

The bill, SB 2677, provides direct access for wellness care, injury prevention, fitness, or patients who have a previously diagnosed condition. In addition, the legislation allows PTs to provide services to children with a diagnosed developmental disability, as part of a home health care agency, and patients in nursing homes pursuant to the patients' plan of care, according to PT Bulletin.

Direct access allows patients to avoid delays in treatment, and this bill leaves 10 states without it.

However, the Georgia legislature passed a direct access bill last week, which is awaiting the signature of the governor.
