Sex abuse charges against therapist change policies

Healthcare Security Weekly, March 20, 2006

Charges of sexual abuse against a therapist at the Children's Hospital and Health Center in San Diego have brought about widescale changes in the hospital's security policies, according to the Associated Press.

Wayne Albert Bleyle, a respiratory therapist at the hospital, is accused of molesting brain-damaged, comatose boys and girls and taking photos of himself in the act with a cell phone camera.

The hospital has now banned camera phones in the facility, installed security cameras in patients' rooms, and made it mandatory to leave curtains open around patients most of the time.

Prosecutors charged Bleyle with two counts of child molestation and 24 counts of child pornography, though investigators say they believe the total number of victims may be much higher in reality.

The hospital is also considering making it mandatory for two medical professionals to be present during most procedures.
