Effective pain control may aid physical therapy

Rehab Private Practice Alert, March 29, 2006

A study by Lenox Hill Hospital links effective pain management in joint replacement surgeries to successful physical therapy, according to the Doctor's Guide.

Results show that patients who are more comfortable through the use of effective pain killers are able to undergo more effective physical therapy.

The study looked at 128 patients who underwent knee or hip replacements, with some patients receiving injections of ropivacaine, ketorolac, epimorphine, and epinephrine, and others receiving nothing.

Researchers say they believe those experiencing more pain suffered in their recovery because of physiological effects.
