Collect infection control data

The collection of data is a time-consuming and labor-intensive task. With healthcare dollars at a premium and staffing resources in short supply, it is necessary for everyone in healthcare to look at how their time is best spent. How do surveillance and other data-collection activities contribute to the quality of services provided to patients? Why collect data at all?

  • For compliance. Anyone who has been involved in a recent regulatory survey can give one very good reason to collect data: It's required.

  • For your own use. Data collection and proper analysis are critical to your job as an infection control practitioner. If you're not thinking about data, you're not doing your job.
