Virtual nurse visits grow as healthcare costs rise
E-Health Trend Watch, March 24, 2006
Healthcare providers are using video monitoring to check in on patients as a way to deal with the national nursing shortage. Home telecare devices are operated through a phone line and hooked up to stethoscopes and blood pressure and oxygen readers that transmit results to a remote station monitored by a nurse or doctor. It saves providers time and gets patients the attention they need. The number of companies manufacturing such devices has tripled to 15 in the past three years. According to the American Telemedicine Association, the Veterans Affairs Department plans to double the number of patients it puts on home telecare to 20,000 during the next year.
