Technology helps quadriplegic use thoughts to control prosthetic hand

E-Health Trend Watch, March 24, 2006

Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems, Inc. has announced that its first clinical trial participant, Matthew Nagle, has used its BrainGate Neural Interface System to use his own thoughts to control a computer and command a prosthetic hand on a table beside him to open and close. Nagle is paralyzed from the neck down from an injury four years ago that severed his spinal cord. The company is hoping to use the technology to enable those with quadriplegia to perform various everyday living tasks to become more independent.
