Alaska's governor proposes electronic immunization registry
E-Health Trend Watch, March 17, 2006
Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski has proposed spending $7.2 million on current and newly created public health programs, including adding an electronic registry to track people's vaccination history. Critics worry about privacy issues, but parents and doctors argue that it will help keep better track of immunization histories. These histories can become difficult to maintain, given that children in Alaska often obtain their immunizations at multiple clinics, leaving parents to store paper vaccine records. Electronic records would also prevent people from getting unnecessary costly vaccines that they may have already received.
