Florida heart hospital wired for paperless records
E-Health Trend Watch, February 17, 2006
The Pepin Heart Hospital & Dr. Kiran C. Patel Research Institute hospital of University Community Hospital (UCH) in Florida began accepting patients on Valentine's Day. UCH designed the hospital in cooperation with GE Healthcare. The hospital will store all of its records electronically, and hospital officials want the facility to be nearly paperless, according to the St. Petersburg Times. There will be computers with flat screen monitors and wireless keyboards at each patient's bedside containing electronic records. Doctors will be able to use these records to prescribe drugs, pull up x-rays, and perform numerous other normally time-consuming tasks. Patients will also be able to use the computers to order meals, surf the Internet, and check e-mail.
