Survey: Massachusetts docs are good listeners
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, March 24, 2006
Massachusetts residents can view performance results for more than 400 multi-physician practices in that state, thanks to a new statewide survey that collected data from more than 50,000 patients. The survey was conducted by Massachusetts Health Quality Partners (MHQP), a coalition of physicians, hospitals, health plans, purchasers, consumers, and government agencies working to promote improvement in the quality of health care services in Massachusetts.
The results of the survey show that primary care physicians communicate well with patients during visits, with 80% or more of patients reporting that their doctors always explained things clearly, listened carefully, and provided clear instructions. However, the data also shows variability among physician practices with opportunities for physicians to improve in several areas, including how well they give preventive care and advice, how well they know their patients, and how well they coordinate patients' care with specialists.
