Celebrate Doctors Day March 30
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, March 28, 2006
This year's annual Doctors Day, observed on March 30, will promote emergency preparedness, according to a press release by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).
Although the day honors all physicians, the first Doctors Day was observed after Crawford W. Long, MD, administered ether anesthesia on a patient to remove a tumor from his neck in 1842.
"The advances in anesthesiology since Dr. Long's historic event have resulted in a medical specialty comprising highly trained men and women who are dedicated to relieving pain and saving lives in a variety of settings, from the operating room to a battlefield or disaster site," said ASA President Orin F. Guidry, MD.
In the event of a health crisis, including some recent disasters in the United States, anesthesiologists play a vital role in critical care and trauma medicine. Their training and preparation set an example for patients and their families to use the day as motivation to develop emergency plans, according to the press release.
