Schools prepare for bird flu

Infection Control Monitor, March 22, 2006

Schools in the United States are being told to plan for the possibility of an outbreak of bird flu, the Associated Press reports.

Federal health leaders say it is not too early for schools to make preparations, including finding ways to teach even if schools send the students home.

School boards and superintendents have gotten used to emergency planning for student violence, terrorism or severe weather. Pandemic preparation, though, is a new one.

The government has created preparation checklists and response steps specifically for preschools, grade schools, high schools, and colleges. Some of the advice includes urging students to wash their hands and cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze to keep infection from spreading. Other concerns for schools include legal and communication issues.
