Eating tomatoes, greens, carrots may reduce asthma among women

Respiratory Care Weekly, March 22, 2006

There's something about carrots, tomatoes, and greens that may prevent asthma in women, according to Thorax. In a study of 69,000 French women, researchers found that women who ate the most spinach and lettuce were 22% less likely to report asthma than women who ate the least. Women who reported eating the most carrots also reported 20% less asthma, and tomato consumers reported 18% less asthma.

The researchers could not pinpoint the specific nutrient in the vegetables that offers the asthma benefit, but previous studies point to carotenoids, which convert to Vitamin A in the body. Carotenoids are prevalent in carrots, tomatoes, and greens. In this study, the authors point out that the asthma reduction might be attributable to eating more healthy foods in general, reported Thorax.
