WHO unveils new TB-eradication strategy

Respiratory Care Weekly, March 22, 2006

In advance of World TB Day March 24, World Health Organization (WHO) launched a new tuberculosis-eradication (TB) initiative called the Stop TB Strategy, according to Lancet. The program includes boosting healthcare in Eastern Europe, where an outbreak of multidrug-resistant strains of the disease is spreading, and in Africa, where many immune-compromised HIV patients are vulnerable to the disease.

WHO announced the program in conjunction with a 10-year, $56-billion plan unveiled in January, reported Lancet. The agency's goals include cutting TB cases by half, treating 50 million people worldwide, and saving 14 million lives. Currently about 1.7 million people die each year from the disease.
