CMS warns of Medicare phone scam
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, March 21, 2006
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a press release warning seniors about a new telephone scam in which a caller asks Medicare beneficiaries for money and checking account information to help them enroll in a prescription drug plan.
This scheme is called the "$299 ring" for the typical amount of money Medicare beneficiaries are talked into withdrawing from their checking accounts to pay for the nonexistent prescription drug plan. CMS has received complaints so far from Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Georgia.
CMS has established a toll-free telephone number-877/772-3379-that consumers can call if they encounter this scam.
