Resuscitation mix-up lands SNF in hot water
LTC Liability Monitor, March 16, 2006
A Pekin, IL, nursing home received its third fine in eight months-this time after failing to provide CPR in a timely manner to a resident who later died, according to the Peoria Journal Star. Staff at Timbercreek Rehabiltation and Healthcare Center thought the resident who vomited and slumped over a dining room table had a "do not resuscitate" order. They moved her to a nearby room and began to remove the food from her mouth instead of starting CPR, which they allegedly provided only after another staffer discovered their mistake.
During the confusion, emergency transport called to the facility for a code blue was told the resident was do-not-resuscitate and that it would not need to come, the Journal Star reported. Prior to the November incident, the nursing home received a $5,000 fine for an elopement incident in August, and a $55,000 fine for an abuse and neglect charge in September.
