Most Tennessee nursing homes now have sprinklers

LTC Liability Monitor, March 16, 2006

Following enactment of a state law requiring the installation of sprinkler systems, only five nursing homes out of the 336 in Tennessee are still without them, and all are working to add them, the Associated Press (AP) reported. State legislators passed the law following a range of fire incidents over the past several years, including a September 2003 fire in Nashville which left at least 15 residents dead.

The law states any facility with 12 or more residents must have sprinklers in place. With the cost of installing sprinklers about $10,000 to $40,000, many smaller facilities are downsizing, reducing their resident ranks over budget concerns, the AP reported.
