SNF residents protest Cook County smoking ban
LTC Liability Monitor, March 16, 2006
As Illinois' Cook County Board approaches its vote on a county-wide smoking ban, area SNF residents have requested that the ban not extend to nursing homes, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The Illinois Council on Long-Term Care, which represents more than 200 facilities, 26,000 nursing home professionals, and 37,000 residents, issued a statement to the board detailing the differences between nursing homes and bars, restaurants, and other ban-affected establishments, saying residents should be able to smoke in the place they live.
Thousands of SNF employees and residents continue to call the board members to voice opposition as the vote nears, the Sun-Times reported, and several plan to be in attendance for the upcoming meeting.
