Security a problem on MA hospital's psych ward
Healthcare Security Weekly, March 13, 2006
Tewksbury (MA) Hospital is trying to determine where its security is failing after a recent report showed there were 25 attempted escapes and five successful ones from its psychiatric unit over a period of three months, reports the Lowell Sun.
Town and state officials are investigating the hospital's security policies after one of the escapes led to a three-car crash and others led to house break-ins.
The hospital often calls the local police department in for help, though the hospital is not releasing records of any major problems the Sun also reported.
State officials hope the hospital will tighten patient supervision, though they told the Sun they understand a hospital is not a prison.
