Survey: Half of high school students report some hearing loss
Rehab Private Practice Alert, March 15, 2006
A recent survey reported that more than 50% of high school students have at least one symptom of hearing loss.
The survey, performed by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) examined the use of portable music players and links to noise-induced hearing loss.
ASHA says that key findings included the following:
- 28% of students turn up the volume on their television or music player
- 29% say "what" or "huh" during normal conversation
- 17% have ringing in the ears
All three figures were higher in high school students than adults.
