Birth control procedure receives extended Medicaid coverage
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, March 14, 2006
A nonincisional Essure® permanent birth control procedure, developed by Conceptus, Inc., is now covered by Medicaid in New York, Texas, and Wisconsin, according to Women's Health Weekly.
The procedure, which can be performed in ambulatory surgery centers, entails the deployment of "a soft microinsert into the fallopian tube through the cervix using a minimally invasive transcervical tubal access catheter.
"Once in place, the device is designed to elicit tissue growth in and around the microinsert to form an occlusion or blockage in the fallopian tube," according to the story.
The three states join 33 other states in offering Medicaid coverage for the procedure.
