New Jersey nurse gets eleven life terms

LTC Liability Monitor, March 9, 2006

A former nurse-one of the worst serial killers ever discovered within the U.S. healthcare system-was sentenced last week to 11 consecutive life terms for the murders of 22 people in New Jersey, reported the Washington Post. Charles Cullen escaped the death penalty after making a deal with prosecutors to tell them which patients he killed with hard-to-detect drug injections.

During a career that spanned 16 years, Cullen worked in 10 hospitals and nursing homes. He always managed to find another job, in part because hospitals did not share their suspicions about him for fear of being sued. As a result of the case, New Jersey and Pennsylvania lawmakers have passed legislation protecting nursing homes and hospitals from legal action when reporting disciplinary actions taken against employees.
