CARE OF MOUTH AND TEETH

Long-Term Care Nursing Advisor, March 8, 2006

Encourage your residents to perform oral hygiene at least three times a day. Ideally, however, residents should practice oral care before breakfast, during morning care, after lunch, after dinner, and before retiring for the night.

CNAs should encourage residents to do as much of their oral hygiene as possible for themselves. When residents brush their teeth and clean their mouths, they exercise their fingers and arms and gain self esteem.
