Study links nurse staffing to hospital quality

According to a study appearing in the January 2006 issue of Health Affairs, U.S. hospitals could avoid as many as 6,700 patient deaths, 70,400 complications, and four million days of hospital care by hiring more registered nurses and increasing the hours of nursing care per patient, the Detroit Free Press reports.

The study examined 799 acute-care hospitals in 11 states. The study concluded that recommended nurse staffing growth would result in hospital budget increases of only 0.4% to 0.8% after hospitals factor in savings associated with reduced medical errors and hospital stays.
