Annual medical care visits exceed one billion

Physician Practice Advisor, March 8, 2006

Visits to doctors' offices, emergency rooms, and hospital outpatient departments exceed one billion annually, according to a report on ambulatory medical care from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The annual number of medical care visits reached 1.1 billion in 2001-2002, up 10% from the visit rate in 1999-2000, according to the report. Half of the 1.1 billion visits were to primary care doctors, a 17% increase from the previous year.

Since 1994, visits to all types of settings have increased with the exception of visits to medical care specialists. The report also found that those living in the Northeast sought medical care more often than those living in the rest of the country, and persons 65 and older saw doctors about 7.4 times per year, which is more than any other age group.
