AMA supports MedPAC's physician payment recommendation
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, March 7, 2006
The American Medical Association (AMA) has issued a statement in support of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission's (MedPAC) recommendation in its 2006 report to Congress to increase Medicare physician payments 2.8% in 2007.
The recommendation asks Congress to override the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. Included in the Act is a Medicare payment formula resulting in a 4.6% Medicare physician payment reduction in 2007, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians.
"The AMA is gravely concerned that Medicare payment cuts will harm seniors' access to care," Duane Cady, MD, AMA board chair said in the AMA statement. "If enacted by Congress, this new MedPAC recommendation will help physicians continue to treat Medicare patients."
