PT aids in stroke recovery longer than expected

Rehab Private Practice Alert, March 8, 2006

New research shows that physical therapy can help stroke victims regain strength as long as five years after suffering the stroke, according to the Fort Worth (TX) Star-Telegram.

While previous studies thought patients could only regain strength for the first year, the study performed by the University of Alabama at Birmingham showed patients were able to regain use of a weak arm after two weeks of intensive therapy.

The results, published in The American Heart Association's online journal Stroke, say the therapy helps the brain to send signals to the weakened area.
