COLD AND FLU VIRUSES

Respiratory Care Weekly, March 1, 2006

People living and working closely together as occurs in nursing homes must use extra precaution to prevent an outbreak of cold and flu viruses. One way to keep residents and staff safe is to encourage them to get flu shots annually.

If your facility does face an outbreak, help protect visitors by posting signs at the doors to caution people not to visit during this time. It may also help to limit residents time eating in central dining rooms and group recreational activities to prevent spreading the virus between residents.

CNAs with a cold or the flu should stay home, if possible. If it's necessary to come to work, CNAs should limit close contact to residents. Also, don't forget the importance of hand hygiene to prevent the spread of infection.
