Number of surgical cosmetic procedures increases one percent

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, February 28, 2006

The number of cosmetic surgical procedures increased by 1% in 2005 compared to 2004, according to a press release from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).

Statistics show that surgical procedures increased 1% to 2.1 million, with liposuction as the most frequently performed surgical procedure. Nonsurgical procedures declined 4% to 9.3 million. The most popular nonsurgical procedure was Botox injections.

"The surgical portion of the statistics show interesting results in the breast augmentation and breast lift areas," said Mark L. Jewell, MD, ASAPS president, according to the release. "While some procedures are down, these areas continue to increase; breast augmentation by 9% and breast lift by 23%. This also marks the first year that we have segmented the device used for breast augmentation, saline or silicone. This should give us significant trending data when silicone devices are approved by the FDA [Food and Drug Administration]."
