NQF proposes standardized reporting of infections

Quality Improvement Monitor, February 27, 2006

The National Quality Forum (NQF) announced on February 21 a project to seek consensus on a set of national standards for public reporting of healthcare-associated infection (HAI) data. HAIs, which include surgical wound infections, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and urinary tract infections, kill an estimated 90,000 patients each year in the United States.

NQF plans to endorse national reporting standards and a standardized method of collecting, aggregating, and reporting HAI data that will allow comparisons across and  among states over time. NQF-endorsed standards have special legal standing as voluntary consensus standards.
