Cultural barriers to pain relief

Long-Term Care Nursing Advisor, February 27, 2006

Always consider culture and age when assessing pain. Culture affects the resident's beliefs and outward responses to pain.

Residents from some cultures believe that displaying outward signs of pain signifies weakness, so they are very stoic. In other cultures, residents will cry loudly when having pain.

Religious beliefs also effect the resident's perspective about pain. Sadly some believe it is a punishment from their higher power, so they will not complain or volunteer that they are having pain. However, if asked directly, they will often admit to having pain.
