GA hospital reviews security after infant abduction

Healthcare Security Weekly, February 20, 2006

The Medical Center of Central Georgia is reviewing its security measures after a 16-year-old girl was able to kidnap an infant from the maternity ward earlier this month, according to the Macon Telegraph.

Hospital officials say no one at the facility made any obvious mistakes and that a slight delay in securing the elevators was behind allowing the girl to escape with the baby.

The girl took the baby from its mother by posing as staff. Security alarms from the child's electronic bracelet sounded when she left the area, but doors locked too slowly.

The hospital immediately sent out an Amber Alert and authorities tracked down the kidnapper and infant quickly.
