OSHA strong on enforcement in 2005
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, February 14, 2006
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) sustained a vigorous enforcement program during the 2005 fiscal year (FY) despite the temporary suspension of activities due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita, according to a January 31 report appearing on its Web site.
The agency performed 38,714 inspections, exceeding its goal of 37,700 but down from 39,167 in FY 2004.
OSHA slapped employers with 85,307 violations in FY 2005, a 9.5% increase since 2001 but 1,401 fewer than in FY 2004. Willful violations jumped 62% from the previous year, which demonstrates the agency's focus on identifying employers intentionally violating the law, the report claims.
