Study confirms financial payoff for information technology

Acute care hospitals can realize a financial benefit from investing in information technology (IT), according to a study published in the January-February Journal of Healthcare Management.

Florida State University researchers examined publicly available financial data and information on IT adoption among 82 Florida hospitals, reports The Business Journal of Jacksonville. The researchers broke down IT investment into three categories of hospital operations: administrative (billing, payroll supply chain management), clinical (pharmacy, laboratory, electronic health records, computerized order entry) and strategic (managed care, nurse staffing, executive information).

Researchers found improvements in each of the categories individually and collectively associated with increased IT investment.
