Treating delirium

Long-Term Care Nursing Advisor, February 10, 2006

Treatment for delirium begins with the identification of the causes. Keep in mind that there might be several causes and all must be resolved in order for the resident's mental status to clear.

Once you determine the causes of delirium, treat the underlying conditions. Ensure the resident receives good nutrition and hydration. Monitor and assess intake and output. Review and discontinue unnecessary drugs.

Also, provide nursing comfort measures and assistance with activities of daily living. Provide pain relief as needed, bearing in mind that unrelieved chronic pain may be a cause of delirium.
