Study: Lean diets offer only limited benefit

LTC Liability Monitor, February 9, 2006

Diets that are low in fat do not necessarily protect women against heart attacks, strokes, or various forms of cancer, according to the results of an eight-year study of nearly 50,000 middle aged and elderly women. The study, conducted by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, directly contradicts the long-held belief that eating less fat offers a range of health benefits and protection against disease, reported the Washington Post.

Researchers said there is still benefit in reducing intake of particular unhealthy fats, such saturated fats from meat and trans fats from processed food. Although the study only included women, researchers said the same likely holds true for men, the Post reported. The results of the study were published this week in three papers in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
