Staff member fired from SNF after newspaper tell-all
LTC Liability Monitor, February 9, 2006
A nursing home staff member was fired from her job last week after sharing stories of prior drug addiction with a local newspaper, according to The Joplin Globe of Joplin, MO. Valerie Ackerson, who agreed to be interviewed for the newspaper's series on methamphetamine addiction, said her supervisor at Autumn Place nursing home dismissed her, claiming she had become a "liability" because of the story. A spokesperson for the nursing home denied the reason, but did not give a different reason for the dismissal, the Globe reported.
Ackerson went through drug court years earlier and had completed probation by the time she was hired, at which time Autumn Place knew of her history, she said. Ackerson did not say whether she plans to fight the dismissal.
