Prison changes hospital policy

Healthcare Security Weekly, February 6, 2006

One week after a prisoner shot a correctional officer and killed him at Washington County Hospital, state prison officials changed their policy for guarding inmates at the hospital, reports the Baltimore Sun.

Prisons must now assign two guards to any inmate at the hospital. The policy will remain in effect as officials evaluate the incident and determine what else could have been done to protect the officer.

Last week, Brandon Morris of Baltimore, shot Jeffrey Wroten in the face after stealing Wroten's gun. He then escaped the hospital by taxi before police caught up with him later that day.

While two guards are assigned to maximum-security inmates at hospitals, Morris was a minimum-security inmate. Officials hope the policy of requiring two guards for every inmate will be extended statewide.
