Lawsuit: Indiana SNF workers tampered with body
LTC Liability Monitor, February 1, 2006
The daughters of a 74-year-old former SNF resident filed suit against Hospitality House in Bedford, IN. They alleged staff bathed their father's body, changed his clothes, and placed him in bed after finding him dead outside the facility, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Orland Jean, who died in January 2004, reportedly exited the facility through an unlocked door in the Alzheimer's unit.
A dietary worker found Jean and other staff brought him back inside to deliberately obscure the facts surrounding the incident, the suit alleged. A coroner's report named environmental hypothermia as the cause of death. The Indiana State Department of Health fined Hospitality House $13,500 following the incident, according to the Sun-Times. Hospitality House has refused to comment on the lawsuit.
