Health savings account enrollment hits 3 million

Physician Practice Advisor, February 1, 2006

At least 3 million Americans have enrolled in high-deductible plans sold in connection with health savings accounts, America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), a trade group, said last week.

The AHIP study is based on aggregate responses from the group's member companies, which include nearly all the companies offering HSA-eligible plans, according to a report in The Philadelphia Inquirer. The group will not release the details of the study-such as age, income, demographics, and how many participants in health savings accounts were previously uninsured-for another month.

"Everyone is very surprised at the robustness of this number," AHIP President and CEO Karen Ignagni was quoted in the Inquirer article. Enrollment in health savings accounts has tripled over the past 10 months.
